The Osun State Governor, through his Deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi, who also chairs the Osun State Boundary Committee, has appealed to the National Boundary Commission (NBC) to facilitate an amicable resolution of the Osun-Oyo boundary disputes.
This appeal was made during a joint meeting of officials from both states, convened at the Police Zonal Headquarters Conference Hall in Osogbo, Osun State.
The meeting, which brought together stakeholders from affected border communities, local government areas, and state governments, aimed to address the current insecurity surrounding the Iwo-Lagelu boundary dispute.
Prince Adewusi emphasized the need for cooperation and a spirit of "give and take" between the two states to facilitate a quick and final resolution of the dispute.
The Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Barr. Abdulraheem Adenayo Lawal, who also chairs the Oyo State Boundary Committee, acknowledged the past efforts of the NBC in resolving interstate boundary disputes.
He called for a clear definition of the boundary to make it more visible to border communities and prevent further escalation of disputes.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 11, AIG Emuobo Fred Ekokotu, urged both states' vigilantes to desist from making arrests related to boundary disputes, emphasizing that this would contravene the law.
He encouraged both parties to prioritize peace, assuring that the Nigeria Police would maintain law and order without bias.
Traditional rulers and stakeholders stressed the oneness of the people and advised the NBC to examine historical evidence presented by both states for a clear and just definition of the boundary.
The Director-General of the NBC, Surv. Adamu Adaji, assured that the commission would continue to collaborate with both states to ensure an amicable and permanent demarcation of their common boundary.
The meeting concluded with a communique outlining several key resolutions, including:
- Promoting peaceful coexistence among border communities
- Facilitating the release of persons detained in connection with the Iwo-Lagelu boundary dispute
- Convening a technical meeting of experts to discuss submissions and agree on documents for boundary definition
- Establishing functional local government boundary committees and joint peace and security committees
- Conducting sensitization campaigns to advocate for peace and oneness
- Maintaining the status quo and refraining from actions that could lead to disorders and violence along the boundary corridor.
